Complex lighting design requires special expertise, coordination with other trades

When Brandywine Realty Trust chose to renovate key public areas of their commercial building in McLean, VA, general contractor Rand Construction called on Power Solutions to take on the exacting task of fitting out custom lighting throughout the 24,000-square-foot facility.

The project included installation of custom light fixtures for the first floor lobby, five elevator lobbies, conference center, locker rooms, fitness center and more.

The front entrance lighting installation alone required 1,400 LED tiles covering nearly 1,200 square feet. This challenging area, which used Arktura metal panels and Cooledge lighting, required the collaboration on CAD designs between Power Solutions and other contractors providing drywall and steel structure construction.

In total, Power Solutions installed 1,200 fixtures, 1,835 feet of custom linear LED fixtures, 126 pendant fixtures and 180 down lights. The project required installation of fixture controls with touch pads and remote programming options. These controls were implemented using Wattstopper products, including nearly 260 switches, sensors, and relays. Wattstopper’s Vantage line provided touchpad dimming controls and Wattstopper’s new Raccess system enabled remote programming options linked between floors.

The complex and striking design necessitated drawing changes and encountered design complications that made scheduling a challenge. But Power Solutions kept the project on track and coordinated with multiple trades to complete the $1.3 million electrical installation successfully.
